Yarn & Wool

Welcome to the East Wind Farm Wool page!

We’re happy to be able to offer beautiful roving (ready for handspinning) and handspun yarn from our small flock. Our sheep are mixed breeds, and the resulting yarn is soft, springy, and durable. It can be made into lovely sweaters, hats, and mittens – and more.

What’s the process?

Each spring, the sheep are shorn. Over the next few weeks, I carefully go through each fleece, removing hay and any short or very dirty pieces of wool. We then send or take the wool to a mill, where it is washed and carded. The wool comes back as roving, beautifully clean and ready for handspinning or felting. In some cases, I process the wool myself by washing, dyeing, and carding here on the farm.

As time permits, I then handspin the wool into yarn. While I sometimes create bulkier and finer yarns, and “singles”, I prefer to spin a two-ply worsted weight yarn – because I think it’s the most versatile. See below for some photos that show what it looks like.

Prices & Availability:

Handspun yarns are now available on EtsyPlease visit our shop at:

Because yarns are created entirely by hand, it can take time to process special orders. They’re spun in a smoke-free, pet-free home. Please feel free to contact us to place an order or to inquire about availability.

‘Northman’ mittens, made from our wool ‘Maddy’ and ‘2014 blend’ (and a bit of blue from my stash!).

These yarns make lovely projects. Below are a couple of examples – a series of four unique hats made from our natural ivory yarn, and some mittens made from two different natural colored yarns.
